I Tried These 10 Most Popular Firehouse Subs: Hereโs My Honest Ranking

Being a professional food blogger, it’s always challenging when you guys ask in the comments, to compare the entire menu of any restaurant and then tell you which one is the best and which one is the worst. So recently I tried these 10 most popular Firehouse Subs, and ranked them from worst to best. I’ve also mentioned what I liked in #1 (Italian), and what I disliked in #10 (New York Steamer).
Hereโs What I Liked (and Didnโt) About These 10 Most Popular Firehouse Subs:
Let’s start by reviewing each Firehouse Subs one by one. I will write what I liked about that sub as well as what I disliked in it.
#10. New York Steamer

New York Steamer had a nice tangy flavor, ut the thing that really made it worse (for me) was its chewy, stingy meat. The rest of the combination of mustard, mayo and Italian dressing was OK, but the meat texture really made it difficult to complete this sub.
#9. Smokehouse Beef and Cheddar Brisket
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/ar-taste-test-firehouse-subs-smokehouse-beef-and-cheddar-brisket-858b838129634559b6dfa8e7c92ca010.jpg)
New York Steamer had a nice tangy flavor, ut the thing that really made it worse (for me) was its chewy, stingy meat. The rest of the combination of mustard, mayo and Italian dressing was OK, but the meat texture really made it difficult to complete this sub.
#8. Sweet and Spicy Meatball

This sub is quite different from other subs, because of meatballs. Although the marinara and provolone gave it a good flavor, it was a bit on the sweet side, the sauce was sweet (as mentioned in their name). But overall sub was not spicy enough (for me).
#7. Engineer
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/ar-taste-test-firehouse-subs-engineer-003ccc1be1cc44ce96eb35be7854d5a8.jpg)
This sub is called ‘Engineer’, as if something is engineered, but to be honest, I wasn’t impressed enough. Although the turkey and Swiss combo was decent and the mustard-mayo seasoning added to flavors, the mushrooms were not fresh at all, and tasted like they were from a can.
#6. Turkey Bacon Ranch
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/ar-taste-test-firehouse-subs-turkey-bacon-ranch-bd6dd1203c3b4fa883349a7820e45457.jpg)
This sub was decent, had nice ingredients like turkey, bacon, cheddar and veggies, but it had too much mayo and ranch sauce, which almost killed the flavors and I could barely taste the turkey bacon.
#5. Club on a Sub
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/ar-taste-test-firehouse-subs-club-on-a-sub-9ca1f9ec29b641e195cfb05cb614a74a.jpg)
I found nothing much wrong in this sub, it was just a bit too heavy to call it a ‘club’ on a sub. But overall the turkey, ham and bacon along with melted Monterey Jack all tasted very good.
#4. Hook and Ladder
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/ar-taste-test-firehouse-subs-hook-and-ladder-d4a8936dbb8945818ffcbefde9c21da9.jpg)
This Hook & Ladder is one of their signature subs, and it nearly hit the mark. It was a bit on the sweet side (for me), but overall the sub was tasty and had simple fresh flavors.
#3. Firehouse Steak and Cheese
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/ar-taste-test-firehouse-subs-firehouse-steak-and-cheese-3590fa15178246ab869df87b7067c638.jpg)
This sub was also satisfying and decent. The steak could have done better, as it tasted like a slice of frozen meat. But other than that, the sub was tasty, caramelized onions and bell peppers gave it a good flavor. Melted provolone and mayo also blended well.
#2. Firehouse Meatball
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/ar-taste-test-firehouse-subs-firehouse-meatball-05e98f54a4a444b0aeaef692d10516f9.jpg)
The Firehouse Meatball sub was perfect. The meatballs were juicy, the marinara was bold and spicy. The melted cheese on top of the meatballs was re-hardened and nearly slid off. That made it to the 2nd spot, but overall it was fresh and tasty.
#1. Italian
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/ar-taste-test-firehouse-subs-italian-19e2a56ea5f148f09fd7a50ee46ed76e.jpg)
This Italian sub was honestly the best sub of all I tried, and no wonder why, when you search ‘Most Popular Firehouse Subs’ on Google, the Italian sub comes at the top. I liked everything about this sub. The pepperoni and Italian dressing were bold and flavorful. If you want to try any one sub, go with this Italian sub, and you will not regret it!
